The Duplicate SKU Sync app supports orders that contain multiple products sharing the same SKU.
When an order includes several products with the same SKU, the app calculates the total quantity ordered for that SKU and updates the inventory for all products using that SKU.
How It Works
Suppose you have the following products:
- Product A → SKU:
ABC123 - Product B → SKU:
ABC123 - Product C → SKU:
ABC123
All three products share the same SKU.
When an order is placed, the app adds together the quantities ordered for that SKU and synchronizes the remaining inventory across all linked products.
Example 1
Inventory before the order
Product | Inventory |
|---|---|
Product A | 10 |
Product B | 10 |
Product C | 10 |
Order placed
- Product A × 2
- Product B × 2
- Product C × 3
Total quantity ordered: 7 units
Inventory after sync
Product | Inventory |
|---|---|
Product A | 3 |
Product B | 3 |
Product C | 3 |
The app updates all products sharing the SKU to the same remaining inventory.
Example 2 (Overselling)
Inventory before the order
Product | Inventory |
|---|---|
Product A | 2 |
Product B | 2 |
Product C | 2 |
Order placed
- Product A × 2
- Product B × 2
- Product C × 1
Total quantity ordered: 5 units
Since only 2 units were available for the shared SKU, the order results in overselling.
Inventory after sync
Product | Inventory |
|---|---|
Product A | -3 |
Product B | -3 |
Product C | -3 |
Important Notes
- The app synchronizes inventory even when multiple products with the same SKU appear in a single order.
- Inventory is calculated using the combined quantity ordered for the shared SKU.
- If the total ordered quantity exceeds the available inventory, the resulting inventory can become negative, depending on your Shopify inventory settings.
- Orders containing multiple quantities of the same shared SKU have a higher risk of overselling, especially during high-volume sales.
Tip: To minimize overselling, regularly synchronize inventory and avoid maintaining very low stock levels for products that share the same SKU.
