If you manage a large catalog on Shopify, you might encounter variant rate limits when importing products via Spreadr. This guide explains why Shopify limits product creation and how to manage your catalog effectively.
Before You Begin
- Product Variants: A product variant represents a specific option configuration (e.g., size or color). A single product with multiple colors and sizes can consume many variants.
- Shopify Restriction: This rate limit is enforced by Shopify on a platform level to guarantee storefront stability. It is not controlled by Spreadr.
Variant Creation Thresholds
- 50,000 Variant Limit: Once your Shopify store hosts 50,000 product variants, Shopify restricts the speed at which any application can create new variants.
- Daily Rate Capping: Beyond the 50k threshold, apps can only create up to 1,000 new variants every 24 hours.
- Shopify Plus: This limit does not apply to stores on the Shopify Plus plan.
Best Practices
- Batch Your Catalog: Group imports in batches below 1,000 variants per day.
- Purge Inactive Listings: Delete outdated or out-of-stock listings to keep total variant counts below 50,000.
